Is A Latex Mattress the Best Mattress?

One huge mistake many make when upgrading your bed is not getting a better mattress. When it comes to mattresses, there are so many options that you may not be sure which one you should get. If you’re in the market for bed updates, consider latex mattresses. A latex mattress is made of natural materials, offers support and pressure relief, and remains comfortable to sleep on for many years.

A brand-new latex mattress may be the best investment you’ll be making for your sleep and overall health. Here are some things to look out for when you’re in the market for the best latex mattress:

Latex mattresses, unlike other foam mattresses, are made from latex extracted from the rubber tree rather than polyurethane made from crude oil. This makes latex foams springy, firm, and free from off-gassing, making it a healthier and more eco-conscious option for your bed.

Just make sure to choose certified organic or natural latex foam over blended or synthetic latex foam.  Not only is it very firm and durable, it’s also naturally hypoallergenic and 100% resistant to dust mites, bacteria, and fungus, which are leading causes of allergies.

When purchasing a mattress, look for these certifications to help make sure you’re getting the best quality latex mattress for the price point.

  • Oeko-Tex certified means your latex mattress is non-toxic. Oeko-Tex mattresses are made of natural and organic materials. They are free from any chemicals that can harm your health, including phthalates, lead, arsenic, synthetic dyes, heavy metals, VOCs, etc.
  • Greenguard Gold certified means your latex mattress is scientifically proven to meet some of the world’s most stringent tests in chemical emissions.
  • Global Organic Latex standard (GOLs) means that the latex used in making your mattress is 100% organic and meets standards for human health, safety and welfare, and environment.
  • Global Organic Textiles standard (GOTs certified organic) means that aside from the latex, other materials used in the making your mattress are also 100% organic, like organic cotton or organic wool.

A huge part of determining which mattress to buy has to do with the feel. This is highly subjective and depends on whether you prefer to sleep cool or warm, your body type, the kind of sleeper you are, and also if you share your mattress at night.

Sleeping Cool vs. Warm

Some sleepers like a cool bed, while others find more comfort in a warm one.

Sleeping cool. Natural latex mattresses naturally eradicate body heat. The best mattresses are those with comfort layers made with natural cotton. You should also ensure that the cover is made of eco-conscious materials, such as an organic cotton cover. These are breathable and will allow you to sleep cool.

Sleeping warm. Choose latex mattress types with comfort layers made from natural wool. Also, mattress covers made from organic wool are best as wool warms you while still letting your skin breathe.

Body Types

There are a number of firmness options available to you, depending on your weight and support needs.

  • Soft or medium latex mattresses.  For small or lightweight sleepers, since these allow your body to sink into the mattress without inhibiting blood circulation on pressure points and causing various body aches.
  • Medium-firm and firm latex mattresses. For heavier sleepers or those with a bigger build because they offer enough resistance to support your shoulders and hips.
  • XL-sized latex mattresses. For sleepers over six feet tall who don’t fit into 80-inch long king size mattresses.

Sleep Positions

The firmness options may also vary depending on which sleeping position provides the most comfort.

  • Soft latex mattress. For back and side sleepers who enjoy sinking into the latex bed when they sleep.
  • Medium latex mattress. For primarily side sleepers because it offers a balance of support and cushioning.
  • Medium-firm latex mattresses. For back and stomach sleepers since it offers slightly firmer support than your medium variant.
  • Firm latex mattress. For back sleepers who require the most support.

Sleeping alone vs. with someone. If you’re sleeping with another person or a pet, you may not use the bed equally on both sides. Use medium or medium-firm latex mattresses if you have different sleep positions or body types.

Mattress Type: Dunlop latex vs. Talalay latex

You can also have your pick of natural or synthetic materials when it comes to your mattress type.

Dunlop Latex is made by pouring liquid latex into a mold and then left to dry. This produces a dense foam which is chunkier at the bottom and fluffier on top.

Meanwhile, Talalay Latex is a kind of blended latex made by only partially filling the mold with liquid latex mixed in usually with polyurethane or some other chemicals. Then, the mold is vacuumed to allow the liquid to expand. The mold is then frozen to preserve the shape of the latex.

Afterward, the foam is heated to cure and produce the final product, a more uniformly dense latex foam but a less dense foam overall compared to Dunlop latex. Additionally, natural Talalay is a more advanced way of making latex foam, hence it can be more expensive than Dunlop.

One of your top considerations should be the longevity of your mattress. You don’t want to be buying new mattresses every few years!

Natural latex mattresses made of 100% natural latex are the most durable, lasting at least 15 years. Meanwhile, synthetic latex mattresses only last 5-10 years.

Also, choose natural Dunlop latex mattresses because these use only organic materials. Therefore, it’s denser and will be able to withstand more wear and tear over the years.

Avoid Talalay latex because all Talalay latexes are blended latex. Even natural Talalay latex will be some form of blended latex.

Better yet, choose mattresses that offer warranty periods or free trials before you commit.

While in the market for high-quality latex mattresses, you’ll encounter brands offering a 10-year warranty, 20-year warranty, or 25-year warranty. Some may even go as far as a lifetime warranty. Though the price goes up with longer warranties, they’re a more cost-effective option in the long term when you do encounter issues with comfort and support decades down the line.

You should also look for companies that offer a free trial on their latex beds. This allows you to get a feel of the mattress and see whether it relieves all pressure points at night.

You’ll also be able to return a mattress without wasting money on it if it doesn’t provide the comfort it promised. This gives you more room to choose the best latex bed for you without compromising your good night’s sleep.

Manufacturing and Delivery

When choosing a natural latex mattress, pay attention to where your mattress is made and how it travels to your home.

A locally-made mattress is best since it’s likely to be more affordable. Patronizing local businesses also helps your country’s economy. Buying mattresses from local brands also means that the trip will be more eco-friendly compared to if you ordered a mattress from overseas. You’re likely to get smoother delivery conditions as well.

Since you’re paying a huge amount for your mattress already, find a company that offers free shipping or white glove delivery and good customer support. This may seem trivial but when you’re having sleep problems related to your mattress, the last thing you need is a company withholding support even if they offered you the best sleep trial and warranty.
